Mis Mawrth /March 2015

Mis Mawrth /March 2015

Ar ddechra Mis Mawrth mae gweld yr Iris reticulata yma yn tyfu mewn potyn wrth ddrws cefn y ty yn wledd i'r llygaid ac yn ddigon i godi calon unrhyw un am yr hyn sydd i ddod.

The Iris reticulata with its striking blue petals is native to Russia, the Caucasus and northern Iran.
They are hardy and prefer a well drained sunny position which dries out in summer.

Planhigyn sy'n blodeuo ar wal gefn y ty ydi hwn.  Mae'r gwenyn wrth eu bodd yn hel neithdar a bwyd oddiwrtho.  Does gen i ddim syniad o'i enw!  Allwch chi fy helpu?

This plant has no name as I have forgotten to label it!  Do you know what it's called?  Let me know.
The bees enjoy visiting the flowers as it provides an early supply of nectar and sugar.

Dyma ymwelydd blynyddol i'r pwll yn yr ardd.  Yma mae'r gwryw i'w weld ar gefn y fanyw ac yn gafael yn dyn o amgylch ei chanol.  Tra mae hi wrthi yn brysur dodwy wyau mae yntau yn ei ffrwythloni.

Frogs are very welcome visitors to the pond.  We know when they have arrived due to the loud mating call of the male advertising the fact that he is ready and waiting!

Ers cyflwyno chwid i'r pwll mae nifer y llyffantod wedi lleihau ac hefyd nifer y malwod!

Since the introduction of 10 call ducks to the pond the balance of nature has been changed and fewer frogs visit the pond but also fewer slugs!

Narcissus Tete a tete mewn potia pridd wrth ddrws y cefn yn llawn blodau.  Hawdd iawn i'w tyfu ac wedi iddynt orffen blodeuo byddwn yn eu planu allan yn yr ardd er mwyn gwneud mwy o sioe at flwyddyn nesa.

These delightful miniature daffodils (tete a tete) will brighten even the dullest of spring days and will provide a spectacle for a good month.  The are undemanding and easy to grow in borders or containers as shown. Once they have finished flowering we will transfer them into the soil where they will grow and make bold drifts naturalised within the grass

Tra gwahanol ydi'r Narcissuss cyclamineus bach yma sy'n hadu ei hyn yn y borderi ac yn y gwair.
This Narcissus cyclamineus is found self seeding in borders and grass and provides welcome colour in early spring

Beth gwell na lliw glas yr Hepatica transsilvanica yma i oleuo cornel dywyll

Hepatica is named from its leaves which like the human liver has three lobes.  It was believed at one time to be effective as a treatment for liver disorders  although poisonous in large quantities!

Mae mis Mawrth yn amser tacluso, hollti, amlhau, tocio a thori'n ol!  Felly llawer i'w wneud er mwyn darparu'r ardd ar gyfer y tymor i ddod.

A busy time in the garden preparing the soil and plants for the coming season.
Plants can now be split to make new plants, cut back to neaten and prune out old growth.
Take time to enjoy the garden and decicde where needs attention.

Chwefror / February 2015

 Chwefror / February 2015

Amser trwsio'r hen 'fwrdd' ar gyfer y cychod gwenyn, neu gwneud un newydd sbon fel mae Jon wedi gwneud yn fan hyn!

Jon has taken time to create a new bench for the beehives.  Far superior to the old one (which as we took it out of the ground gave up the ghost).  We now have space either side of each hive which can be used when inspecting the hives.  It also means we don't have as far to lift the supers (heavy work when they are full of stores).

'Sgerbwd Hydrange Annabelle yn dal i edrych yn bensaerniol ac yn rhoi rhyw fath o strwythur i'r ardd yn y gaeaf.  Ond bron yn amser i'w thori'n ol oherwydd mae blagur y flwyddyn nesa yn dechra dangos.

Nearly time to cut back the remnants of the flower heads of Hydrangea Annabelle which have provided a structural focal point to the winter garden

Gweddillion gwair yn barod i fynd i'r domen er mwyn gwneud lle i'r tyfiant newydd.
Seedheads of grass ready for the compost heap.  Their removal will allow new growth to push through

Os bydd amser a tywydd yn caniatau, yna byddwn yn gwagio'r domen ar ben y pridd fel 'mulch'.  Ond rhaid peidio gwneud hyn os oes rhew neu eira.
Mulch any empty pieces of land with composted material from the compost heap but only if the ground is frost and snow free.

Crocus tomassinianus mewn gwair yn agor ar ddiwrnod heulog i ddangos lliw saffrwn y briger.
On a warm sunny day Crocus tomassinianus will open to show its saffron coloured anthers.

Pan fyddwn yn gwagio lludw allan o'r 'woodburner' byddaf yn rhoi y lludw llawn potash ar y cyrins duon i hybu tyfiant a ffrwytho.
Woodash from the woodburner is used as feed for the blackcurrants.

Amser cael gwared o nyth 'deryn du cyn bod y clematis yn ei orchuddio!
Time for a clear out. This blackbird's nest needs clearing before the clematis starts to grow!

Mis Ionawr /January 2015

Mis Ionawr / January 2015

Adeg yma'r flwyddyn gallwn ddal fyny efo gwaith cynnal a chadw angenrhediol.
Un o'r jobsus mwyaf ddi-ddiolch ydi clirio iddew a dadorchuddio y wal derfyn ar Ffordd y Gader.
Mae hon yn wal hanesyddol oherwydd mae o fewn ardal cadwraeth y dref ac yn adlewyrchu y gwaith cerrig arbennig sydd yn nref Dolgellau.

Winter gives us time to catch up on essential maintenance.  Here, we are exposing the boundary wall of the garden by removing ivy.  This wall is of historical importance as it reflects the stonemason's skill and use of stone within Dolgellau.
Clearing Ivy from the boundary wall on Ffordd y Gader

Y gwaith o glirio'r coed yn parhau wrth i Jon hollti  a symud y coed.  Byddaf innau wedyn yn ei roi mewn i'r sied er mwyn iddo sychu a bod yn barod i'w losgi ymhen blwyddyn.

Splitting and stacking wood is an ongoing task.  This must be done so that the wood is ready for burning next winter.

Eirlysiau wedi codi o ardd Cefn Bere, Dolgellau, ac wedi
eu rhoi mewn pot pridd ar gyfer dod a nhw mewn i'r ty.
Wedi iddynt orffen blodeuo fe fyddaf yn en rhoi allan
yn yr ardd er mwyn iddynt cael cynyddu.

Snowdrops taken from my parent's garden at Cefn Bere, Dolgellau.
Here there are many named species of Galanthus.  These pots will be taken indoors to provide inspiration for the coming year.  Once flowering has finished they will be planted out in the garden.  At the present time we have about 20 named Galanthus which makes us Galanthophiles!

Mae sawl planhigyn yn blodeuo ac yn arogli'n fendigedig yn Mis Ionawr .
Fy ffefryn ydi Daphne bholua 'Jac

queline Postill'.  Mae hwn yn tyfu mewn  man cysgodol wrth ochr y ty gwydr ac yn gwynebu'r de.  Er ei fod mor ddi nod, gallwch ddim osgoi yr arogl hyfryd sydd ganddo

Daphne bholua 'Jacqueline Postill'.seen here growing on a south facing wall.
Although the flowers are small and insignificant, you can't miss it's heady
 perfume                                                                                                         T

Mae gwrych o Potentila yn ychwanegu strwythyr i'r ardd, mewn lliw a ffurf er nad ydi wedi cael ei thocio eto.
Providing structure and colour is this hedge of Potentilla fruticosa.  Although uncut as yet it is in contrast to the more formal box hedge on the opposite side.

Mis Rhagfyr / December 2014

Mis Rhagfyr / December 2014

Ychydig iawn sydd i'w wneud yn yr ardd amser yma'r flwyddyn, heblaw am gynnal a chadw.
Wedi i'r Scott's Pine cael ei thorri lawr mae digon o waith symud a hollti'r coed.
Gwaith pleserus iawn ar ddiwrnod oer.

Little can be done in the garden at this time of the year, other than general maintenance.
Since felling the Scott's Pine we have been able to keep warm:
                                                   once by splitting logs
twice by moving and stacking logs
                                                   thirdly by burning logs.

Mae 'sgerbydau planhigion a gwrychoedd bocs yn cynnal diddordeb ac yn fwyd a chysgod i adar a trychfilod bach drwy gydol y tywydd oer.
Plant remnants and box hedges maintain interest during the cold months and provide much needed food and shelter for birds and small insects.

Mewn tywydd oer mae planhigion megis y Rhododendron yn edrych yn drist gan bod eu dail yn 'hongian' fel yn y llun.  Ond ffordd o ddiogelu'r planhigyn ydi hyn drwy amddiffyn y ddeilen pan fydd yn rhewi a dadmar am yn ail.  Hyn yn dra gwahanol i'r llun isod sy'n dangos planhigyn tynner wedi ei ddiogelu rhag gwaethar tywydd oer gyda 'fleece'.

Species of Rhododendron are able to defend themselves from the worst of the cold by 'curling' their leaf thus protecting them from repeated freezing and thawing. Other plants need to be protected by such thing as a 'fleece' as the are too tender to survive the cold weather.

Er hyn i gyd mae llygedyn o obaith yn dechra dangos ei drwyn drwy'r pridd oer a gwlyb.  Eirlysiau cynta'r flwyddyn yn dechra dangos.  Ond mae cryn amser cyn iddynt ddeffro yn iawn a blodeuo i ddangos dechrau'r Gwanwyn.

Winter has only just started but already the first Snowdrops are starting to push their way through the cold wet soil, a sign that things will change.

Mis Tachwedd / November 2014

Mis Tachwedd /November 2014

Mae'n amser rhoi yr ardd i gysgu am y gaeaf a clirio dail.  Byddwn yn casglu'r dail ac yn eu gadael mewn cawell am ddwy i dair mlynedd er mwyn i'r dail bydru.

Jon transporting the fallen leaves into the cages above, where they will stay for 2-3 years.  We will use this leaf mould as a soil conditioner when planting new plants.  An invaluable aid to rooting due to its fine crumb structure.

Mae angen gorchuddio blaen dyfiant planhigion rhag y barrug a'r oerfel  Gweler corun y Dicksonia wedi'i orchuddio gyda gwellt, dail ac yna blanced.  Putting plants to bed is an important task at this time of the year.  Both the crown of the Dicksonia and Gunnera have been covered with straw, the leaves then bent over the crown and finally protected from the worst of the winter weather by a breathable protective blanket.

Amser yma'r flwyddyn does dim llawer o blanhigion yn blodeuo.  Ond dyma ddarganfod Arbutus unedo.  Planhigyn ddi-nod ond mae'r gwenyn yn ei fwynhau.
Arbutus unedo (Strawberry Tree) is an evergreen shrub with white urn-shaped flowers and red strawberry-like fruit in the autumn.  Our specimen is not old enough yet to bear fruit, but the bees enjoy visiting the flowers.

Yn anffodus mae gerddi yn dioddef colledion.  Rhai yn fwy na'i gilydd. Eleni mae'r goeden 'Scots Pine' wedi marw ar ei thraed ac felly doedd dim dewis ond ei thorri ar gyfer coed tan.
Now you see it now you don't.  This magnificent Scots Pine has stood for a good 80 years, but has now unfortunately been felled and used as fire wood.   We are now left with a hole in which we can plant some new plants
